Benefits of Acupuncture After A Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA)
Vivian Takafuji

Can acupuncture really help the recovery from an accident? As you can imagine, the realistic answer is that it depends on the severity of injuries and duration of time passed after the trauma. For moderate to severe injury, It is imperative that one is first evaluated and treated by a Western trained traumatology physician to identify the areas of bone or soft tissue damage and to ensure the patient’s condition is stable. This is of special importance if there is any indication of concussion to stop any internal bleeding in the brain and identify neurological signs of dysfunction. More mild injuries may not require a traumatology consult but the patient should be monitored closely for worsening of symptoms over a couple of weeks following the accident.

Traditional Chinese medicine views physical trauma as acute “stagnation of Qi + Blood” in the channels of the body; this would certainly be the case following the impact of a MVA. A customized acupuncture treatment plan involves strategic placement of sterilized, thin, stainless steel needles in the meridians around the area of injury to move these obstructions, re-engage and re-integrate disrupted energy pathways (i.e. nerves). The anticipated result is reduced inflammation, bruising, swelling and musculoskeletal pain (often seen in the back, neck and limbs, or manifesting as migraines/tension headaches).

Importantly, acupuncture can also help with the psycho-emotional stress following a car accident, including anxiety and insomnia. It is thought to do so by down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system and encouraging the release of natural “feel good” hormones (endorphins and enkephalins). For most non-acute, mild cases of MVA-related injury, a Chinese medical intervention can be very helpful alongside Western medical supervision. Please inquire if you would like to pursue acupuncture treatment to speed your recovery from an accident.
